Suki and Sam, her debut book, is the culmination of her clinical experience in assisting children with grief. It was inspired by a series of paintings by Louisiana artist George Rodrigue. Dr. Marotta observed that children were often overwhelmed by their feelings of loss, whether it was the death of a pet, or a relative. She wrote the book she wanted to share with children to help them openly express sorrow and begin a conversation about loss within families. Suki was the name of her pet Portuguese Water Dog who also worked as a therapy dog in her office. Dr. Marotta is thrilled to work with talented artist Dorothy Shaw who created the perfect illustrations to convey the sadness and hope of this story.
Doodle and Peck Publishing will be releasing Suki and Sam in the Fall of 2019
Here is the pitch: Sam is a growing young artist who loves her dog, Suki. But when Suki dies, Sam’s grief washes all the color out of her world. Will Sam ever feel like painting again?
